  • This dataset contains sea-borders based on Maritime Boundaries Geodatabase from Flanders Marine Institute. It contains borderlines of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the 12 nautical mile limit (SMZ) of Germany and neighbouring countries of North Sea and Baltic Sea. This data is compiled and prepared for displaying background information for metadata of geological surveys, according to Geological Data Act (GeolDG).

  • The map of the BGR geoscientific collections displays the localities of the collection‘s objects. Two different types of positions are presented: localities based on available coordinates (´Fundort erfasst´) and subsequently generated coordinates based on descriptions (´Position ermittelt´). The BGR-Geoviewer provides a link directly to the GewiS application (https://gewis.bgr.de) and thus to the description of the collection objects.

  • Between 1977 and 1983, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) took approx. 80,000 water samples and 70,000 sediment samples from streams and rivers in several sampling campaigns on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany at that time and examined them geochemically. In addition to the geochemical prospection of areas with potentially deposits, the aim of the investigations was also to record indications of anthropogenic environmental pollution. The results of these investigations were published in the Geochemical Atlas of the Federal Republic of Germany (Fauth et al., 1985). The data collected within the framework of the Geochemical Atlas of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1985 is a geochemical survey of the former territory of the Federal Republic of Germany which is unique in its high sampling density. All later geochemical investigations were carried out with a much lower sampling density. This valuable and irretrievable data is now being made generally available via the BGR geoportals. In addition to the digital provision of the original data material, the texts from Fauth et al. (1985) and distribution maps produced according to the method used in 1985, the data were reprocessed using modern methods. The WMS shows the distribution of the measured element concentrations and parameters in stream sediments in five different coloured point and colour shaded contour maps for each element or parameter.

  • The 1:5 Million International Geological Map of Europe and Adjacent Areas shows the pre-Quaternary geology of Europe onshore and offshore. In addition to the geology attributed by age, petrography and genesis, also magnetic anomalies, tectonic structures, metamorphism and – in the offshore areas – information about the continental/oceanic crust and the continental margin, are shown. The map was developed by BGR under the umbrella of the Commission of the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) and in cooperation with geological surveys organisations of 48 countries and more than 20 research institutes.   • The map shows spatial units of Germany that can be uniformly described and delimited with respect to the type of flow as well as the chemical composition of the groundwater. In total, a distinction is made between five regions and 24 subregions, which have been assigned to the most important landscape units in Germany. For each subregion, a schematic lithological column profile has been compiled, showing a typical layered structure of the subsurface of each region. The types of rock are additionally subdivided into aquifers, aquitards and aquicludes. The aquifers are classified into the three classes of pore, fractured and karst aquifers, while the aquitards are divided into unconsolidated or consolidated rocks. Another distinction is made according to the prevailing chemical environment of the rock (silicate, carbonate, sulphate, organic). As a result, ten types of aquifers and six types of aquitards are distinguished. The basis for the map is the digital data of the Geological Map of Germany 1:1,000,000 (GK1000).

  • In the map, all strata are first classified in the four main types “pore aquifers”, “combined pore and fractured aquifers”, “fractured and karst aquifers” and “aquitards and aquicludes”. Further differentiation is made depending on the areal extent and productivity of the aquifers according to the classification of the Standard Legend for Hydrogeological Maps (SLHyM). The productivity classes have been derived from permeability values. In addition, the surface strata are divided into 19 different types of consolidated or unconsolidated rocks and four types of covering layers. Furthermore, the map shows salinity zones of near-surface groundwater in inland areas, as well as zones of saltwater intrusions along the coast. Areas in which groundwater is affected by mining are also shown. The map “Hydrogeology” is based on the digital Geological Map of Germany 1:1,000,000 (GK1000) published by BGR in 1993. The digital GK1000 contains attributes for the stratigraphy, lithology and genesis of the rocks.

  • The map “Groundwater resources in the ECOWAS region” captures and standardises existing groundwater data of West Africa and gives a consistent regional overview on the groundwater resources. It provides a quantitative assessment of aquifer productivity using a combination of aquifer flow type and expected borehole yield. The map highlights the suitability of aquifers for water supply on different scales while at the same time showing the physical limits of groundwater development. Map elaboration comprised the harmonisation of existing continental and regional geological maps and the attribution of hydrogeological units with expected yield data compiled from a literature metasurvey. Insert maps highlight the geological structure, geogenic background levels of arsenic and fluoride, and groundwater recharge.

  • Map service of the Recycling Atlas of the Federal Republic of Germany. The map of the metal recycling sites of the Federal Republic of Germany is published by the German Mineral Resources Agency in the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources. It shows the locations of Metal recycling sites for the metals aluminum, lead, precious metals, iron/steel, copper, magnesium, multi-metal (sites that recycle complex metal systems), multi-metal battery (sites that recycle metals from the recovery of complex battery systems), nickel, refractory metals, zinc, tin and mercury. In addition, information such as location capacities and recycling input rates can be queried.

  • Knowledge of the geological conditions of the upper approx. 50 to 60 metres of the seabed is an important basis for professional geotechnical exploration and assessment of the subsoil in shallow marine areas. For individual areas where drilling data, pressure soundings and seismic measurements were available in sufficient quality and quantity, a total of 18 subsoil sections were prepared. In the profile sections with a total length of about 625 km, information on the bedding density and the nature of the North Sea subsoil is presented.
